What Is It?
A synovial cyst is a fluid-filled sac that forms in the joints (commonly in the back) often as a result of degenerative changes or inflammation. These cysts can cause pain, stiffness, and limited mobility in the affected joint.
How is the Procedure Performed?
Synovial cyst aspiration is a minimally invasive procedure and is generally safe and effective for relieving symptoms associated with synovial cysts. Using CT guidance to visualize the cyst and surrounding structures, a needle is inserted into the cyst. The needle is connected to a syringe, which is used to withdraw fluid from the cyst. Medication is injected to help reduce pain and inflammation. As the fluid is withdrawn, pressure within the cyst decreases, which can alleviate pain and other symptoms associated with the cyst. You may be given a mild sedative to help you relax and remain still during the procedure.
How Do I Prep For The Procedure?
Do not eat or drink anything after midnight (12:00 am) the night before your procedure. You may take medications with a sip of water in the morning. Bring a list of all prescribed medications with you to the procedure. You may be asked to hold diabetic/weight loss medication or blood thinners. You should arrange to have someone take you home after the procedure.
What Happens After The Procedure?
Patients go home the same day. After the aspiration, the site may be covered with a sterile bandage. Patients are typically able to resume normal activities shortly after the procedure, although some mild soreness or discomfort may persist for a short time. In some cases, the cyst may reoccur, requiring additional treatment such as corticosteroid injections, physical therapy, or, in severe cases, surgery. It’s essential to follow up with your healthcare provider for further evaluation and management.
