What Is It?

Synovial cyst aspiration is a medical procedure used to alleviate symptoms associated with a synovial cyst. A synovial cyst is a fluid-filled sac that forms in the joints, often as a result of degenerative changes or inflammation. These cysts can cause pain, stiffness, and limited mobility in the affected joint.

Synovial cyst aspiration is a minimally invasive procedure and is generally safe and effective for relieving symptoms associated with synovial cysts. However, in some cases, the cyst may reoccur, requiring additional treatment such as corticosteroid injections, physical therapy, or, in severe cases, surgery. It’s essential to follow up with your healthcare provider for further evaluation and management.

How Is It Treated?

During a synovial cyst aspiration:

  1. Local Anesthesia – A local anesthetic is injected into the skin and deeper tissues surrounding the cyst to numb the area and minimize discomfort during the procedure. Moderate sedation may also be provided to help the patient relax during the procedure.
  2. Aspiration – Using CT guidance to visualize the cyst and surrounding structures, a needle is inserted into the cyst. The needle is connected to a syringe, which is used to withdraw fluid from the cyst. Medication is injected to help reduce pain and inflammation.
  3. Fluid Removal – As the fluid is withdrawn, pressure within the cyst decreases, which can alleviate pain and other symptoms associated with the cyst.
  4. Analysis – The fluid obtained during aspiration may be sent to a laboratory for analysis. This analysis can help determine the nature of the fluid and rule out other conditions.

How Do I Prep For The Procedure?

The patient is positioned comfortably, typically lying down. The skin overlying the cyst is cleaned and sterilized to reduce the risk of infection.

What Happens After The Procedure?

After the aspiration, the site may be covered with a sterile bandage. Patients are typically able to resume normal activities shortly after the procedure, although some mild soreness or discomfort may persist for a short time.
